Getting staff on board

Every person who works for your business can be part of your energy-saving team. A good staff awareness and motivation programme will harness everyone's ability to reduce energy waste on a daily basis.

Awareness

Everyone has the power to change behaviour, but first they need to know why and how. Talking about energy efficiency is a good start, as often, people really don't know how much energy they consume or how they could use less.

Start by gaining a picture of how much people in your workplace know about the subject of energy.

Ask some simple questions, for example:

  • What is energy?
  • What different types of energy do you use and for what?
  • What does energy cost?
  • What is the potential for saving?
  • How can you help save energy?

Motivation

Getting people on board means making them individually responsible and helping them feel their actions can make a difference. Initially they may ask:

  • Why save energy?
  • Why should I contribute?
  • Why should I bother when others don't?
  • What's in it for me?

Your intranet

One way of keeping your staff updated is to set up an intranet page highlighting energy efficiency activity in the organisation, tips and hints for making a difference at work and opportunities for everyone to get involved.

Step-by-step guide

To help get your staff positively involved in reducing energy consumption, we have put together a free step-by-step guide. This includes case studies on how other organisations have involved staff, plus ideas to help get your programme rolling.

Build the team

Changing people's behaviours is a big task, and you'll need all the help you can get to make the changes successfully.

Know what staff think

Before you create a programme, it's really important you know what people think about saving energy, what would motivate them to save energy, and what problems you might come across when you implement the programme.

Planning

This is where the work really begins. Here you'll put together your plan for a successful programme, including timelines and how you'll go about changing people's behaviours.

Implementation

Making it happen!

Review

It doesn't just stop after implementation. You'll need to evaluate the programme and make changes to it if some things aren't working.

Maintenance

The aim is to change behaviours for good, and this means putting plans in place to make sure energy efficiency is part of your workplace culture.
