Aggregate and quarry

The Aggregate and Quarry Association (AQA) and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) are working together on a pilot best practice energy programme for the aggregate and quarry industry.

Currently 10.9 tonnes of aggregates and allied raw materials are used annually for every person in New Zealand - 46 million tonnes in total. The energy associated with the extraction of this is considerable - about 6.3 petajoules of energy annually (exclusive of any liquid fuels for transportation).

The pilot programme has three key objectives:

  • To develop a practical programme that delivers real energy and dollar savings to members of the AQA
  • To learn about the most valid approach to energy efficiency and develop a long-term energy efficiency programme for the sector
  • To provide the aggregate and quarry industry with information and tools across the entire sector that enables members to work on energy efficiency over the long term.

The pilot programme will include:

  • A number of site audits to assess energy use and identify energy savings opportunities
  • Mentoring of energy efficiency implementation
  • Development of an energy benchmarking tool
  • Distribution of learnings from the energy audits through sector communications about energy efficiency. This will help build interest in the programme and share results.

The findings of the pilot programme will be used to assess the most suitable approach for a longer term energy efficiency programme for the sector.
