Plastics

The Plastics Best Practice Energy Programme has been developed through a partnership between Plastics New Zealand and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).This programme aims to build energy efficiency knowledge and capability within the plastics industry.

The plastics industry is very energy-intensive and diverse, with a range of different technologies and processes. It includes plastics processors, raw material and machinery suppliers, tool makers, designers and recyclers.

Plastics New Zealand is delivering a comprehensive energy efficiency programme for its member companies.

Components of the programme are:
  • Energy audits
  • Advice and assistance with implementing energy savings
  • Development of a benchmarking/KPI tool
  • Energy efficient technology trial
  • Publishing case studies
  • Sector communication/education.

The focus for 2008-10 is on continued efficiency across the sector, the integration of energy efficiency into industry training unit standards and the provision of a new auditing service to small to medium sized businesses.

Energy efficiency in the Plastics Industry in Action

Read examples of New Zealand plastic businesses benefiting from investments in energy efficient technologies:

  • Viscount Plastics upgraded their cooling water systems and reduced their energy bill by $38,000 per year in the process.
  • Monaghan Plastics switched to all-electric injection moulding machines and discovered just how efficient these machines are for manufacturing products with longer cycle times.
  • Talbot Plastics invested in an electric moulding machine and discovered it used only 35% of the energy of the machine it replaced.
  • Axiam Plastics invested in a vacuum drier which reduced their energy use as well as increased their throughput.
