Episode 13 :: Involving staff in saving energy

[Animated opening sequence, music and title:  EECA Business: The Energy Spot]

We open on Jared, he’s on the roof of building at Carter Holt Harvey in Kinleith. He says:

Hi, today we’re finding out about a business that saved energy and money…

by tapping into a resource they already had.

We see in the background the mill and a sign appears on screen: Pulp & Paper Mill – Kinleigh, Carter Holt Harvey. We see a machine working away in the background.

Now Jared is in the control room talking to one of the management team – we see his name captioned below him:

“Lyndon Haugh, Energy Manager, Carter Holt Harvey”

Well Jared, who better to find ways of saving energy than the people who work with it and use it every day!

We reveal ‘the resource’ – a group shot of CHH employees as we can get - from guys from the factory floor, to fork lift drivers, to managers, to engineers.  We see footage of suggestion box with ideas being posted into a Suggestion box. Lyndon says:

Our people came up with dozens of ideas! And we’ve put plenty into action…

We see views of one of the busy working areas. One of Carter Holt’s people, shows us around, we see his name captioned below him:

“Christopher Brown, Energy Coordinator, Kinleith Mill, Carter Holt Harvey”

With a few small modifications to our mill water supply system, we managed to reduce power consumption by 5 gigawatt hours.

Lyndon says:

Enough to power half of Auckland’s homes for a day!

Jared says:

Wow, that’s serious energy.

We cut back to Lyndon, we see shots of various activities around the plant as we hear Lyndon says

It meant thinking differently and it’s been so successful, we’ve developed an energy strategy and set up a team to coordinate energy initiatives.

Jared:

Fantastic!

Lyndon finishes;

We now consistently save significant amounts of energy and money each year.

Now we cut back to Jared who sums up by saying:

In all businesses, people can help get the most out of energy and reduce costs… to create better business performance.
