Winner and Finalists

Winner

City Rail Link - Carbon footprint measurement and reduction

City Rail Link aims to set the benchmark for delivering sustainable infrastructure in New Zealand. The project has established a carbon foot printing programme on its first two contract packages to identify opportunities and actions for reducing energy emissions. From replacing diesel generators with grid-connected transformers to training haulage drivers in fuel-efficient techniques, CRL’s initiatives are expected to reduce energy emissions by over 2,000 tonnes – a 29% reduction project is on target to achieve its goals, while also reducing costs and saving time.

Finalists

Transit Group - First fully electric bus

Tranzit Group, award-winning and family owned, was founded in 1924 and is a fourth-generation transport and tourism company.

In partnership with AUT and EECA we launched EV1 - New Zealand’s first fully battery powered bus into commercial operation in early 2018. EV1 replaces its diesel equivalent. Our AUT shuttles travel close to half a million km’s annually servicing the universities three campuses. Our findings will be shared with the transport industry in the hope that the uptake of electric buses in NZ is seen as a viable replacement to the current 9,500 diesel buses operating on our roads.

Vector and Dominion Salt - World first in battery and wind energy solution

Vector and Dominion Salt’s innovative project demonstrates the intersection of technology and sustainability in delivering commercial and environmental value.

Dominion Salt’s 660kW wind turbine combines with a 570kWh Tesla Powerpack, installed and configured with a custom control system by Vector. Dominion Salt can now store up to 570kW hours of energy which maximises the wind turbine’s efficiency and smooths the balance between onsite wind generation and variable plant load.

This project puts both Dominion Salt and Vector at the leading edge of renewable energy, with this Australasian-first energy system.
