Auckland Airport explains how they’ve reduced costs despite increasing passenger numbers.


When you measure productivity by the number of people coming through your doors, you need to work hard to maintain quality, while managing costs. Auckland International Airport works hard to give travellers the best customer experience – and they’re doing this whilst cutting costs and emissions. Martin Fryer, the Airport’s Sustainability and Environmental Manager, tells us how.


Cutting energy waste delivers an immediate boost, the same production at lower cost. How you measure productivity will depend on the business you're in. Energy efficiency projects can reduce your maintenance costs and increase your output.

Auckland International Airport's continuous improvement programme has helped them save over 8 million kilowatt hours over the last few years. Whilst growing their passenger numbers by 12% and increasing their floor space, the airport has received a number of awards for its achievements.

The energy efficiency programme has probably saved somewhere in the region of 8 gigawatt hours of energy to date. That's over a three, four-year period. When we're finished, that figure could well double. So we are talking in the region of anywhere between $1.5 and $1.7 million worth of savings.

We've actually achieved energy efficiency savings, but at the same time, we've done
that whilst passenger numbers have been increasing. And, actually, the square metreage of the terminal itself has been increasing as well.

The key metrics that we use are kilowatt hours per passenger, and that was the 20% targets, and we've already kind of smashed that target in terms of carbon. The carbon reductions are around about 23% per passenger. We also look at it in terms of energy per square metre. Increased productivity helps businesses be more profitable. That's got to be good for New Zealand.
