In any business, having keen, motivated staff makes all the difference. Research has found there are three key elements to successfully engaging staff:
1. A formal engagement programme
It’s worth engaging staff right across your organisation from the beginning of your energy management or sustainability journey.
A well-structured programme will boost staff buy-in and participation in the longer term.

We were able to get a large group of people in behind the project and bring in some other people from other areas of our business and train them up….There’s been a massive upskilling opportunity with it as well. And it’s created a platform that we can then take our other building across to the new control strategy and solutions to start to reduce some of their energy usage.
2. Data Collection and Reporting
Start with good data – measure what you’re using, so you can start to manage it. Once energy use becomes more visible, you can work out better ways to manage it, and spot wastage.

Every month, each site gets results in graphical format of how their site is comparing against other sites and against themselves in terms of their energy, water and waste performance. We’ve found that gives us very good feedback and very good incentive to motivate people to become more efficient in their work practices.
3. Empowering Staff
Creating opportunities to share energy and sustainability ideas is a good way to start. You don’t need to focus on big projects - even small changes can make a difference.
