Here are some simple things you can do to save money on your business energy bills while making the working environment lighter, more comfortable and safer.

Insulation

Install ceiling and floor insulation, in areas you heat and cool. Repair seals on external doors and windows. Wrap your hot water boiler and piping with pipe lagging.

  • Wrap your hot water cylinder if it's slightly warm to the touch
  • Wrap the first few meters of hot water pipe from the cylinder, high use hot water pipes and external hot water pipes with pipe lagging

Lighting

Install movement-sensitive sensors and timers to ensure lights are only on when needed. Switch off after hours, leaving only enough to ensure security. Switch to LEDs, and use natural light.

Kitchen and staff facilities

Regularly check staff facilities like ovens, fridges and pipes for leakage and ensure temperatures are set for safety and efficiency. After hours, ensure lights and equipment are turned off where this doesn’t affect safety.

  • Use timers and thermostats on hot water boilers and boiling water dispensers
  • Set hot water cylinders to 60oC, and 55oC at the tap
  • Check seals on fridges and ovens, and thaw fridges and freezers regularly
  • Repair leaking water boilers
  • Install light sensors or timers in kitchen and bathrooms
  • Ask cleaners to make sure they turn the lights off when they leave
  • Only keep lights on that are needed for safety and security

Photocopiers and printers

Switch off office equipment when not in use, or use power-saving features.

  • Switch off appliances when not in use, or install power-saving software
  • Energy efficient appliances often cost the same or only slightly more than less efficient options. Before you buy, compare any extra cost with the amount you'll save each year

Computers and monitors

Turn off computers and other equipment not in use - this saves energy and prolongs the life of your equipment.

Windows and skylights

Make the best use of natural light by opening blinds and installing skylights. 

  • Pull up window shades to make the most of natural light
  • Turn off any non-essential lights in cupboards, toilets and foyers
  • Ask cleaners to make sure they turn the lights off when they leave
  • Only keep lights on that are needed for safety and security

Regular maintenance

Tune-ups can be done at little or no extra cost, as they involve changing existing equipment rather than buying new things. Make one staff member responsible for your tune-up plan.

  • Clean windows regularly to maximise light

TV and monitor screens

Switch off TVs and monitors when not in use, or install timers to switch them off automatically.

  • Make sure TVs and monitors are turned off after use, or on timers
  • Choose energy efficient equipment where possible

Heating and cooling

Check the settings in your office, and tune it to suit the spaces you have.

  • Set the temperature to suit your whole office space – check the thermostats on devices that have them
  • Remove desk heaters and fans
  • Clean air conditioning filters to ensure maximum efficiency
